As twilight falls on Dublin and its surrounds, we travel to Dublin, leaving Maynooth at 4pm. Our bus and guide take us in to the city, beginning with a tour of the Phoenix Park. The Park is one of the largest enclosed recreational spaces within any European capital city and has been home to a herd of Fallow Deer since the 1660s. The residence of the President of Ireland is located here as is the residence of the United States Ambassador.
The tour then proceeds along the quays, passing the Guinness Brewery and the Four Courts. As we make our way into Dublin City Centre, the lighted landmarks and city bridges are clearly visible. Our tour within the city centre takes in such iconic sights as the Spire of Dublin that lights up like a beacon at night, Trinity College, Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin Castle, the Custom House and the Docklands. We pass the elegant houses of Georgian Dublin that were built in the 18th and early 19th centuries, places linked to great Irish writers such as Oscar Wilde and made famous by novels such as James Joyce’s Ulysses.
We disembark for dinner in the city, in the Brasserie Sixty6 before returning to Maynooth.
